YMCA-PDC Health Fair

Written by Johnny Nilsen

There was a line for both the gym and the bounce house to kick off this year’s YMCA-PDC co-sponsored health fair. With over 20 committees filling the gym to educate, screen and consult the public, this family-friendly event was a time to promote healthy lifestyles while involving the greater Stockton community. From the committees involved, families were able to receive free immunizations and were also offered free screenings that included cholesterol tests and bone mineral density readings. Various educational booths also adorned the gym to teach families the importance of subjects ranging from proper diet, to mental health awareness, to COPD prevention. Phi Delta Chi even had its own booth educating patients to learn about the importance of stress control and proper techniques to relieve stress – the booth also allowed families to create their own stress balls. More than 200 screenings were provided on the October 4th health fair at the nearby Franklin High school gym.

While the community was the main beneficiary of this public health fair, the event also served as a grand reunion for many brothers. Over ten Phi Delta Chi alumni returned to their Alma Mater hometown to precept the various screenings offered. Whether it was actually working at the stations with the alumni or only getting the chance to talk after the health fair, it was nice to catch up and hear of all of their successes after graduating. As with all PDC events, the brothers of the Alpha Psi chapter left the site only after a group picture, grateful thank you, and of course, a proper send off with the Phi Delta Chi chant!
